GASWORKS FOR NELSON.
To The Editor of the Nelson Evening Mail. ' Sir — Having shown in my former letter a profit both to vendor and consumer, I will now proceed to give an eatimute of the cost of plant. Although my calculations were based on 500 lijjhts, each burniug ihree hours per night, 6uch works would allow of extension to upwards of 1300 lights burning the same hours. My oalculations suppose . the ■works erected on a central position, in the direction of where the old windmill stood, that being a low level. My measurements | from thence are — to Bridge-street, 140 ft.; Trafalgar-street to Selwyu-place, 1024 ft.; Bridge-street, f^om Government Buildings to Postoffiee, 2310 ft.; Hardy-street, from Government Buildings to Waimea-s.treet, 2310 ft.; Collingwood-street, from Hardystreet to Bridge-street, 660 ft.; Waimeastreet, from ILirdy-street to Bridge-street, 660 ft.; making together a run of 7100 feet. In the calculations for piping, it will be seen that 21,000 are allowed for —
would reduce the gas to ss. 2£d. per 1000 feet. " :I \ I wish it;, to be understood that the above, estimates are b ased upon the , that the undertaking is carried out with skill, judgment, and economy. I am, &c, J. W. Tatton.
