The Superintendent of Nelson, to the Colonial Secretary, Wellington.

Sir — I shall feel obliged by your in forming me if my letter of the 2<>th October last I requesting the support of the Government to a proposed loan for this Province, to the extent of £60,000 for. purposes therein specified, has yet received the attention of the Government. The contract recently concluded by the Honrthe Postmaster-General for a perma'nen.' line of Mail Steamers between this t Colony 'and S'an> Francisco affords an additional argument in 'favor of taking measures; to • render, available for the use of those steamers the valuable seams of steam coal in the Valley of the Grey. The success of ' the' Nelson Waterworks and the invaluable results which liave ensued tp, the^ town from their construction will be held, I trust, to fully justify the Provincial Governmen. in asking for a loan of a further sum to enable them to extend the benefit of a supply of pure water to all parts: of the town, and as regards both the T extension of the Waterworks and the introduction*' of Gas, the interest upon the; sums applied to those purposes^ -will be 1 fully* met by the special rates, as is already, the case jwitt*. the loan for £20,000 expended upon the existing Waterworks. As I have already intira'ated,, it is the intention of the^Provincial Government that botJiithef Watef works! atfd j:t]he ] G_£swor;ks; shall be placed under the control of the Municipal body as soon as the inhabitants of Nelsou --i__4-^d|i I «4e^inb|e *to j avail themselves of the provisions of the Municipal Corporations' Act, 186*7... ]; .
