Public Meeting. — A public meeting to take into consideration the Gas and Waterworks Loan will be held at the Provincial Hall, to-morrow evening. English Mail. — The mail via San Francisco will close this evening at 6 o'clock. A supplementary bag for letters will be made up afterwards at the latest possible moment for dispatch by the Ahuriri. 1 Miss Edith, Palmerston. — This lady gave one of her entertainments at the Assembly Room last night before a wellfilled house. The first entitled " Wanted a Star " gave her an opp'brtuuity of appearing in a number of different characters, all of which she personated with great ability, aod^ nJqch to the amusement .6f the audience. After a short interval she appeared again as Ophelia in the "Mad Scene," and her manner of acting it showed that she 'bad carefully studied the part, and fully entered into the spirit of the scene. The first part of to-night's entertainment will consist of the same pieces as last evening's, but " Lady Audley's Secret " will be substituted for the " Pair of Pigeons," and, we have no doubt, will give far greater scope to Miss Palmerston's powers of acting. Mr. and "Mrs. Alexander intend, we believe, ,to Jeave for Wellington by the Taranaki to-morrow. Richmond Fabmer's Cl«tb. — The farmers oi Richmond, takiag example from their neighbors at sfolre, held a ! meeting on Monday evening, the 15th ult., at th,e Star, and Garter, Ric,hniond, :to consider the desirability of forming a Farriers' Glub in that district, N. Barhicoat, Cunning, Thompson, Malcolm, Harkness, Morse, Best., Kelling, Eden, Hubbard, Silcock, Suttou, aud Kearns; Mr. Jos. Harkness was appointed Secretary pro tern. The committee are to meet on Friday, the 19th instant, to frame rules and regulations for the future guidanec of the Club; which, if well supported by by the farmers around, promises to be the largest and most prosperous society in the province. A letter was read by the Chairman from. Scott Brothers, maltsters, &c, who placed their brewery arid malthouse at the disposal .of tue»club, but it was set aside for the future consideration of the committee. Several resolutions were proposed and carried, and about thirty-fire persons at once enrolled 1 themselves as members. After the customary vote of thanks to the chairman, and a wish for the success aud prosperity of the society, the meeting terminated most satisfactorily. Fire in Auckland. — A serious fire occurred at Auckland on Sunday morninur, resulting in the total destruction of ten houses in Pitt-street, The greater part of the property was insured. The Evening JVews, from which we gather ;ipur information, is a little hazy as to vie amount of damage done, for it states that " it is estimated that the total loss will not be less than £5000 to £6000— although, probably, not so much."
