Nelson Board yof Works. —At a meeting of the Board held this morning, the following resolution relative to the gas and waterworks was agreed to : — "That this Board declares that they will offer no objection to the Provincial Government obtaining the power to borrow money to carry out the proposed objects of gas and extended waterworks upon the contingent security of the ordinary town rates." Resident Magistrate's Court. — W. Collins v. Nathan. This was an action brought to recover £22 7s, being the difference between the price realised on the re-sale of a steam engine, and the sum at which it was contended for the plaintiff that it had previously been bought by Mr. Nathan at auction. Mr. Acton Adams appeared for the plaintiff, and Mr. Fell for the defendant. The case was congested at great length on both sides, and the Bench reserved judgment until Monday next. Miss Edith Palmerston. —We notice that Mr. and Mrs. Alexander (Edith Palmerston) have returned from the West Coast, and purpose to appear at the Assembly Room on Wednesday and Thursday evenings in their entertainment, not yet produced in Nelson, entitled "Wanted a Star," of which our contemporaries iv the other provinces speak in the highest terms. The great dearth of every description of amusement that there has lately been in Nelson, combined with Miss Paltnerston's acknowledged histrionic talent, will, we,should imagine, ensure her bumper houses,. Football. —A match between the collegians and the town club was played at the Botanical Gardens on Saturday afternoon in the presence of a large number of i spectators.. From the first it was apparent that the town men carried too much weight for their more juvenile opponents, who, throughout the match, were reduced to acting entirely upon the defensive. The game lasted nearly two hours, the two goals being kicked by Drew and Cross. The new dress —we can scarcely call it uniform until all appear in it —worn by some of the members of the town club elicited very general admiration, and we hope at the next match to see all the players adopt some distinctive costume.
