Your Directors in presenting their Ninth Annual Report regret to' inform you that the Society's returns for the past year have rot been quite so favorable as in previous years; the profit having fallen to about Nine-pet" cent per annum. The cause >f tl'isfttllingoffis attributed to the very depressed state of business experienced of late, which has pre' ented the. money at disposal from being taken up as formerly ; the Shareholders not caring to bori ow,, unless a profitable return was apparent for the risk 1 incurred.'- Small as the profits are now compi red with those made five or six years ago, it is believed, they now show quite as favorabie a, compa :ison with other investments . as they did then, for the . depression has been, and is so widely spread a: to affect all trades arid investments alike. With respect to the securities held by the Society, ,the Directors have great' satisfaction in informing the Shareholders that they have not receded in valua in, proportion to the repayments made; and that only two; properties are held by the S nciety through failure in fulfilment of the covenants by the realised Sharehelders. But anticipating tl at losses may be made, and if so, to prevent any great reduction ip the profit, the Reserve Fund has been steadily increased during ,the past year, and that now amounts to £70. .'■"''•. To curtail the expenses of working the Sc cietyas much as possible, your. Directors have passed a resolution reducing the Stewards' fees one- thii 3. They also recommend that a Committee b j formed by the meeting to alter the Rules so far as relate to the place of meeting, and the abolishii g of the office of Inspector, which will further reduce the annual outlay. The retiring Directors are Messrs. Burn, (fcooke, and Younger, who are eligible for re-election. Mr.iWm. Fletcher has been duly nominated! as a director, Mr. Catley having declined to act any longer; this meeting, will, therefore, be called upon to ratify the election of the other candidates.
