Agricultural " Show. — : A report of the show which was held at Richmond yesterday, aud was attended, by aa unusually large number of visitors, will appear in our Monday's issue. ! Volunteer Intelligence. — The | Government Gazette of April 28th contains notifications to the effect that Man son Sinclair has been appointed captain, Thomas Garrard lieutenant, and William M'Cabe ensign, of the Nelson City Rifle Volunteers, and Thomas Shea, honorary captain of the Wakefield Rifle Volunteer Cadet Corps. Also, that His Excellency has been pleased to , disband, at their own, .request, ihe Nelson .(City) Arf.illery'Volnnteers, and the No. 1 (City) Company Rifle Volunteers. $ ■ Suburban North. ~ Yesterday the yearly examination for prizes of the scholars at Clifton Terrace school was conducted by the Rev. G-. H. Johnstone, in the presence of three members of the local committee. The examination, which was very searching, clearly proved the satisfactory state of the school. Mr. Johnstone, in awarding the , prizes, said he hoped the parents would, by sending the children more regularly to school, testify their full appreciation of the efforts made, and their solicitude for the general improvement of those, dear to them. . ' ' The " Evening Post ',' and Mr. John Martin. — A quarrel has taken place between our Wellington contemporary and Mr. John Martin, the owner of the Pliccbe and proprietor of the Advertiser, in which the latter, appears to have caught a Tartar. The Post has tho following : — " While apologising . for obtruding : a personal matter upon the public, we would take the liberty of requesting the shipping reporters of the various.journals which do us the favor of exchanging not to trouble themselves sending us files by the Phoebe, as the extremely liberal and highly refined individual who ,is the reputed owner of that vessel has given orders to her purser that they are not to be delivered to us. He has also issued his fiat that our reporter is not to be admitted on board under penalty of his high wrath and, displeasure being showered upon the. captain and officers. To disabuse the public mind of the idea that, our reporter at any time was detected pilfering small coals or other valuables from this tabooed and venerable craft, we may state what we imagine to be the cause of this little attempted persecution. The person who practises it considered himself eligible to represent the City of Wellington in Parliament, and appealed to the suffrages of the electors with great TIT ' ' ' confidence. We told him that he had formed an undue estimate of his own abilities and his standing iv public estimation, and. advised him in friendly terms to withdraw, assuring him that the electors ' would none of him.' He spurned the counsel indignantly, and went to the poll, where the electors proved the accuracy of our judgment by giving him 33 votes out of some 1200 or so. We then reminded. hira o&what we had predicted, and also reproved him for his iudecorous conduct on the polling day. 'This is the head and front, , of our ,. offending,' and we now call on; the, whole colony to' bear witness how just was our opinion that a man who can behave in such a childish and absurd manner was utterly unfit to be trusted with the interests' * of : any constituency.' His refusal to allow the steamer to carry files, is of no consequence t6;us,,asth^y; can be posted^, and then ,of v course. i the. , steamer must' Carry. them noletisvolens.'. ".[ , ;••
