The Nelson Evening Mail. TUESDAY, APRIL 18, 1871.
In order to place our readers in the fullest possession of the news by the mail we have been compelled again to shut out tbe letter of "Anti-Turf," as well as a report of the meeting of the shareholders of the Waimea Quartz-Crushing Company, and other matters of local interest. The Taranaki from the South left Picton for Nelson at 9.30 this morning. We notice that George Brodie, Esq., the Accountant in Bankruptcy is at present in Nelson on his annual tour of inspection. Wesleyan Sunday Schools. — The anniversary of the Richmond Wesleyan Sunday Schools will be celebrated tonight. Cullifokd Company. — We learn that the crushing is still being proceeded with, but that no washing up has yet taken place. The stuff, we are told, is easily and inexpensively crushed, but no great resulta are to be anticipated from the first lot put through. Arrival of the Mail. — A large crowd assembled on the wharf last night to meet the Phoebe, and considerable anxiety was evinced to learn tbe latest news, especially among the German members of our population, For some reason or other the steamer was an unusually long time in ' mooring alongside the wharf, greatly to the disgust of those who were thus kept in suspense. The Phoebe sailed again for the South at 6 o'clock this morning.
