The Nelson Evening Mail. TUESDAY, APRIL 11, 1871.

Aurora ArjSTRALis.-—^A*brilliaut display of the Aurora of * a rosy hue was visible last night from 8 o'clock untiltbe rising of the morn. Parish of Christ Church. — The Easter meeting for the purpose of electing

churchwardens and vestrymen for Citrist Church takes place at the Bishop's Schoolroom at 7 o'clock, this evening. Nelson School Society. — The 27th anniversary of this society will be celebrated this evening ac the Bridge-street School-room, when a tea party will be held at half- past live, to bt* followed by a public meeting, at which the chair will he taken at half-past six, when addresses will be delivered by several gentlemen interested in the institution. Perseverance Mining- Company. — A box of specimeus from this compauy's mine has just been received by Mr. Mabio, the legal manager, and -which can be inspected at his offices by those interested, containing a large per cerJtyage of lead. He has also received one piece of lead weighing about a pound, being 90 per cent, of some specimens smelted by tiie manager at the mine. The dam anemone section of the race is completed, and the other portions are being rapidly pushed on without delay, and it is anticipated that, the machinery will be at work again by the stipulated time. The call due yesterday we believe has beeu readily responded to. Edith Palmerston's Entertainment. — By reference to our advertising columns our readers will see that the above talented artiste will make her first appearance at the Oddfellows' Hull, after an absence of five years. Edith Palmerston during her present tour has been remarkably successful at Auckland, Grabatnstown, Napier, Wellington, aud Wanganui. The Wanganui Chronicle, of April Bth, thus reports of tlin entertainment: — -' Edith Palmerston (Mrs. Alexander),- is a genius; ' Her histrionic . ability is something beyond talent and culture, it rises into genius — that inborn faculty which is beyond and above talent and culture. Her entertainment is strung upon quite a slender thread of adventure ; a Colonial youth comes from the country to Melbourne to enjoy himself for a short while, sowing his " Wild Oats," — seriously, by the way, the worst sort of sowing in which any one can possibly engage, — and his sweetheart follows him for the purpose of knowing what he is about. She personates various characters and thus meets him. In this way the little drama developes itself, aud these characters afford the artiste the opportunity of amusing and delighting her audience. Her French barberess, with a glib chatter of broken English, and her Molly Doolan from Tipperary, are a capital piece of actiug. The latter is espeoiiiiijfsgood. The whole speech and get-up are racy of ihe soil — the brogue, the merry twiukle of tho eye, the arcli look are all Irish, and Irish of the truehearted character. ._JJ?lipre is a second part, in which Mrs. Alexander enacts the London M-iid-of-ull-work aud a doctor 's boy, both with vraisembiance and power. We ought to add that she is well supported by Mr. Alexander and Mr. Pownall. Altogether the entertainment is of a highclass character, such as is only met with at rare intervals ; and is sure to afford an evening's enjoyment to the most fastidious. A Discovery. — A Canterbury paper says that Mr. Fuller, assistaut to Dr. Haasr, recently discovered the skeleton of what is supposed to have been an eagle now extinct. The skeleton will shortly be displayed amongst the other collections at the Museum.
