Higinbotham was most unexpectedly defeated. James Burke, a well-known coal merchant has been killed through a buggy accident. His funeral took place yesterday and was largely attended. Andrew Lowe, an ex-M.P., has been sentenced to six months' imprisonment for larceny as a bailee. Men are being swoi|i in as a naval reserve. Arrived : Waterman from Greymouth ; Swordfish from Dunedin ; Anslralindfrom Lyttelton. Sailed : Hero Cs) for Auckland ; ijady Den ison for Wellington. A meeting-of J. L. Burkes creditors has been held. \Fhe liabilities are £55,000, and the nominal assets £60,000, of which £22,000 are due by a New Zealand fire.:. It is expected that ihe unsecured creditors will get five-pence in the pound. William Duthrie, produce merchant, has stopped payment, Liabilities, £10,000. Flour is selling at £15 to £15 10s. Wheat, scarce and wanted at 6s. 3d. to 6s. 9d. for best Adelaide. The Claud Hamilton sailed on the 23rd March for New Zealand, but returned next morning, one of her boilers having burst. Arrived : Alhambra from New Zealand. Sydney. Practice at the batteries commenced on Saturday and was highly successful. The brig Dayspriug foundered at sea. The crew were saved by the Wonga Wonga. The Assembly has placed flour and wheat on the free list, and declined to increase the ad valorem duties. It is considered that the Act will pass without further amendment. A motion to increase the ad valorem duties was negatived, and a duty on flour rejected. Maize, 3s. 7d. to 4s. Wool ; prices are fully maintained except for best fleece. A vessel from Torres Straits, brings £3000 worth of pearl shells. Adelaide. The Port Darwiu telegraph is progressing favorably. Parliament is prorogued to 30th June, Wheat has advanced to ss. 9d., at which price sales are made. Country flour £13.
