A New Quartz Reef. —Some little stir was created in town to-day by the arrival of a miner from the direction of the IMorus, who reports the discovery of a new reef, specimens of which he brought with him. Some very minute specks ot ijold are visible with the aid of a magnifying glass, and the stone is looked upon as fining of a very promising nature. Thp reef, which lias been traced for about 15 miles, is iv the Marlborough Province, but is sufficiently near to Nelson to prove of benefit to ourselves as well as to our Marlborough neighbors, should it prove sufficiently rich to induce parties to work ■ it, and we need hardly state hew earnestly , we wish that such may be the case, ; By a fire at Cromwell, iv Otago, a thousand pounds worth of oats was destroyed in fifteen minutes. It was the property of Mr. Charles Hair. It is ■ supposed that a fragment of bottle-glass must have become heated by the sun and thus ignited the straw. The Superintendent of Auckland, a few days ago, had the following question put to him : " Will you oppose the wholesale bringing out of immigrants, as the place is already over-stocked with labor, aud use your influence to lay on a ship to enable those in a state of destitution to . leave the Colony ? " The reply of Mr. Gillies was : —" I do not think we have a ship in the harbor small enough. There are few who would like to take advantage <>f it were one laid on. There may be a lew men th t it would really be au advantage to the revenue to get rid of; hut the great mass of the working people know well that this is better for them tiiiui any other place they have ever been in."
