Waimka Election. — The Wangapeka poll was received iv town this morning and was as follows : — Shephard, 36; Baigent, 21, making the total numbers, so far as is yet known, Shephard, 122 ; Baigent, 74. The Matakitaki poll has not yet arrived, but this is nofc likely to materially affect the result. From our Melbourne files we learn that a new water color painting, by Mr. Gully, our "Nelson artist has been added to the collection in the National Picture Gallery of the Public Library. The subject is a view in New Zealand, representing the boundary range of the province of Nelson, and as a work of art is decidedly the best aud most finished of this artist's productions. District Prize Firing. — The firing of the City Volunteers for the district prizes took place this morning, when the top score was made by Sergeant Catley, who tied with Barnett at 40, but having made tho highest score at the longest range he is entitled to rank above Barnett. The Colonial prize firing takes place at Auckland during the first week in March, and we understand thatthe Luna has beeu chartered to convey tho Southern competitors to that province. The following are the scores : —
Perseverance Mining Company. — At a meeting of Directors held on Monday last, Mr. Adams, the mining manager, was present and gave the Board all the necessary information with respect to the new water works, together with plans aud specifications for ihe same. A long discussion ensued, when the Directors came to the conclusion that it would be to the interest of the shareholders to pay off all the hands until the contract for the execution of the works was completed, their reason for doing so beiug that the small, return of gold that it was possible to obtain with the battery at work for ouly twelve hours a day would ieave no margin for profit, and therefore it would be useless to proceed with the crushing until increased motive power was supplied. So far as we can hear outside, this decision appears togive general satisfaction. Ifc will bo observed that, tenders will be received for the works up to the 24th inst. Stoke Farmers' Club.— -A special meeting of the above club was held iv the Schoolroom on Mouday evening last, and was largely attended, Mr. Rout occupied the chair. It was resolved that the members be called upon to pay up their subscriptions at once, in order that an application may be made to the Government rfor a portion of tbe money voted by the Hmorincial Council to aid in the formation I^Hwaiers Clubs. Resolved to hold a HH^HFsale of stock and farm produce H|^Hffid .strict of Stoke. A warm disWiwßMfenlc place place on the introduction wHgHvs. Several farmers complained cfflß^B&ruction to their crops caused by tj9HH9K|which are very numerous in trimHHwhood. It would be absurd toJHIHBb^ all tho " shaking "
persnus iv tho colony filed (heir schedules on Tuesday, but there must have been a coa siderable weeding out. About 80 schedules were presented for signature by Mr. Justice Barry, with liabilities (in round numbers) of £60,000, and nominal assets of £12,000. The rush began early in the day, and his Honor remained in the court till lale in the afternoon, to givo people, who would be Inte even on sucb a momentous occasion, another chance. It wus nearly 5 o'clock before the gentlemen in the Sheriff's office closed their office, as the schedules came dropping in till that hour. Martin's Bat.— A correspondent of the Lake Wakatip Mail writing from Martin's Bay, says :— We have no exciting gold news to communicate : but it is fully believed by experienced miners that this is a gold-bearing locality, and tbat it only needs the men and capitnl to bring it to light in sufficient quantities to create a rush. Gold bas been found not tar frora the south heads, although it is not yet. obtained in payable quantities. The settlers not being gold-hunters have nofc yet formed a prospecting party ; but this is in contemplation, aud should it come inlo operation, we confidently hope before many months to send you a shining report. Those who have settled down here evidently intend by thefr owu industry to furnish their table with more of the good things of this life than fish and fowl, of which we have an abundance, as they haye gone to work with a will to level the primeval forest and force the rich soil that lies beneath, to sustain their temporal interests, and it is gratifying to know that their labor is not iv vain. Already there are a number of flourishing gardens and potatoe patches that certainly show well for the first year. Parties who wish to get a good farm for nothing, and make a quiet, happy, independent home for themselves, would do well to come to Martin's Bay in February or March, when no doubt, many of the best lots that have been taken up will be forfeited, and will he open again for selection.
