A bosom friend,. in the shape of a large snake, was (says the Inglewood Advertiser) a few days ago, comfortably coiled up on the breast of a sleeping babe, who had been temporarily left by Mrs. O'Toole, its mother, while 1 she took some refreshment to her husband, who was harvesting near to bis homestead on the Loddon. Fortunately the mother rescued her infant before any harm had come to it, but the snake also escaped unhurt. - ■ ■ Sixteen horses, four abreast, created quite a sensation in the St. Kilda road yesterday (says a Melbourne paper), and attracted a large concourse of people. The horses were employed in dragging. one of; the 300-pounder guns from the barracks to the central battery, and it is no light work for them over the soft dry sand on the beach. The gun had been got within 500 yards of the battery when it was time to cease work, which will be resumed to-day. The men engaged in superintending the transit were members of the local force.
