Anniversary of Nelson Province. — Preparations are bein^ made for (he o<Ulf<'ll<>ws' nijfl Foresters' Annual Fete, which will t:ike place .-.a iitiunl on the lsi February, beiug the anniversary day of the province. It will ho soon that, tenders are invited for the erection of the large booth in the Botanical Gm dens, and also that the sites for refreshment booths will be sold by by auctiou, by Mr. Mabiu, on Thursday next.. Boat Race. — An interesting race between the three rival boats which had on the previous Saturday been pitted against one- auother, took place on Saturday afternoon, when the order of their coining in was reversed, the Eclipse having on this occasion been sufficiently fortunate to escape the shoals. This little boat took the lead from the first and retained it until reaching the winning post which she passed a little more thun three minutes in advance of the Rose, the Bruce being out of the race altogether. Clifton Flower Show. — The 6th anuual Flower Show and Fete of the Clifton Horticultural Society has this year, owing to the very unfortunate state of the weather, turned out almost a failure. Thursday the sth of January, the day appointed proved a very wet one, no exhibitors made their appearance, and, consequently, there was no show. The steamers Kennedy and Lady Barkly arrived from Nelson via Collingwood about 10 o'clock in the morning with a number of excursionists, some of whom landed in the pouring rain, while others preferred to rernaiu on board. No amusemeuts took place during the day but the rain clearing up a little towards evening. Mr Dodson provided a tea, although a very late one. The "Clifton Christy's Minstrels" gave their entertainment in the evening, and were kindly assisted by two of the ladies in the neighborhood, whose very- effective playing and singing contributed much towards the evening's amusement. It was announced at the conclusion of the performance that the Flower Show would be held ou the following day, should it prove fine. However Friday turned out to be as wet as the previous day, and it was then agreed by the managing committee to postpone the affair until the following Monday, which proved to be a fine day. Preparations were commenced at an early hour, and the Flower Show and sports took place as advertised. The show was not, so good as on former occasions, owing to the state of the weather, and the number of visitors was far short of former years. Towards eveuing many more persons began to arrive, and the Clifton Christy's Minstrels gave auo: her performance with a change of programme. Dancing commenced at the conclusion of the entertaii)menr, and was kept up until daylight., when the company separated, apparently delighted with their evening's amusement, and with that good humour and kindly feeling so characteristic of the annual meetings of the Cliftou Horticultural Society. It is much to be lamented that the weather was so unfavorable, as the committee of management had goue to great trouble and expense in providing and erecting a spacious tent, for the occasion which cost upwards of £45. It was hoped and expected that, with the kind assistauce of numerous visitors they would have been able to recoup their outlay, aud also to hand over n few pounds for the benefit of the Horticultural Society. Owing to the bad weather, barely sufficient was realised to cover expenses. — Communicated.
