At this ' point the history of the two Amazonian risings .begins to diverge ; the ladies in the present case retiring peaceably to their homes without either hanging an abbe or attempting to bum the Hotel de Ville. The subsequent measures of the insurgent females are still more in harmony with the changed spirit of the age. A public meeting was held, attended by the usual small number of strong-minded women 'and the usual large number/ofrowdy men determined to. interrupt the proceedings. The business which took place in the ' intervals of personal encounter between the secretary, a male person and various malcontents in the body of . the hall, consisted principally in tbe discussion of a method of protecting female honor from the invader by means of a tube filled withprussic acid. This apparatus was styled by the inventor the "finger of God " — for which name, however, the secretary proposed to -substitute that of "the prussic finger." Its. operation is thus described : — " The Prussian approaches ; you prick him with the end of the tube ; he is dead. If several Prussians approach, she who has the prussic finger pricks them one by one, and remains in tranquil purity, having round her a" circle of corpses/ This recital was received with tears by the/ women and with laughter by the men. Fresh, disorder soon afterwards ensued, and the meeting ended ih a free fight.
