THE WEEK.
o Christmas week in Nelson would be nothing without the annual regatta, consequently, a sketch of the week would be far from complete unless it contained some allusion to that eveut, particularly so, on the present occasion, when tbe Challenge Cup that, twelve years ago, was presented to the Club, has been taken away from us by a boat belonging to another province. I hear some talk of raisiug a subscription to purchase another Cup to be raced for on the same conditions at future regattas; but if this is to be doue, some of our boat builders must set to work and get crafts ready that are able to hold their own against all comers, and our amateur seamen must serve their apprenticeship to more experienced men and learn how to handle their boats in such a manner as to ensure success. I think it is to be regretted that matters were not arranged in a raore amicable manner with the Wellington crews, as they must have gone away with anything but a favorable impression of the way in which these affairs are managed in Nelson; iu fact, if I may be allowed to say so, there was a want of management throughout as was shown by the unusually large number of protests and disputes. Another very fruitful source of complaint was the absence of every description of amusement on shore ; this is a matter which will have to be looked to by the committee next year if they wish to make their annual holiday a complete success. However, on the whole, the day passed off very pleasantly, aud, if it had not doue so, it 1 would be exceedingly impolitic to grumble, as I was assured by a canny friend the other day, that the regatta was the means of inducing 200 people from Wellington aud the West Coast to visit Nelson; that they were all here three days, and that their individual expenditure during that time could hardly be set down at less than £1 per diem. The multiplication table was then counsulted, and the fact ascertained that, supposing my friend's premises to be correct, £600 of " foreign capitai" must have been introduced into the place during the week. This, ha argued, would cover a multitude of defects iu the arrangements made by the committee. Of course I agreed with him. The war news brought by the Suez mail is meagre in the extreme, and, indeed, tells us but very little that we did not know before. It seems probable that the Russian difficulty wili blow over, the telegram which was forwarded from Hokitika to the effect that war was imminent, being looked upon by passengers by the Eangitoto as a mere canard. I was a little amused on reading in a Marlborough paper the other day the opinion of the Eesident Magistrate at Blenheim on the origin of the war, as expressed by him in an address to the school children of that town. To do him full justice I must quote his speech as reported. After alluding to the scenes now being enacted in Europe, he says: —"Now j
