THE LATE CRICKET MATCH AT MOTUEKA.

To the Editor op the Nelson Evening Mail . Sir — With reference to a rigmarole letter that appeared in this morning's Colonist concerning the above match, I beg to remark that ihe dispute arose solely from the Motueka player, when given out, positively declining to leave the ground, even when ordered by his own umpire. With regard to the three cases of leg-before-wicket, their own umpire gave two out to round arm bowling, in the other case the bowling was underhand. As to the dispute, the sole question was whether the ball struck the bat, the umpire not being eveu asked as to the ball being fairly caught, and the umpire,. not being certaiu, referred it to the Nelson umpire, who decided without hesitation. With respect to cover point being, able to give an opinion on the subject it is preposterous, as slip, in catching the bail, must have had his back to cover point, and considering the erratic movements of cover, point in the early part of the game, other motives can be assigned to his wishing to see more of Motueka. The latter part of the letter any cricketer would disdain to criticise. Respecting the insinuations cast on the competency of tae gentleman acting as umpire for the Nelsou eleven, I am positive that any cricketers who played or witnessed the game will repudiate them with the greatest scorn and contempt. I am, &c, The one who caught the ball.
