Erratum.. — Cullifor.d shares,: quoted yesterday at Is. 6d. discount, should be 9s. 6d. • Prize Firing. —Some excellent shooting was made by the City Artillery this morning. The following are the four highest scores : — 300 yds. 400 yds. 500 yds. Total. Sergeant Smith' . 19 16 16 52 Gunner Barnett .17 15 15 47 Bugler Bird .17 20 5 42 Gunner Dobb .16 13 11 40 Hospital Stores. —By advertisement calling for tenders for providing Hospital stores, it will be seen that wines, spirits, and drugs have been added to the list. The English News which we published yesterday was conveyed to Auckland as part of the ordinary mail telegrams. It is strange that it should not have reached us before. Scientific Association. —The monthly meeting of this Society will take place at the Government Buildings to-morrow evening, when Mr. Avery will read his paper ou "The Prevention of spontaneous combustion in wool and flax," and the discussion on Mr. Simmons' essay on " Higher Education " will be resumed. A full attendance of members is requested. Nelson Regatta. —To-day we publish the programme for the ensuing Christmas Regatta, with the amount of prizes attached. The prize for the Volunteer Whaleboat Race will not be settled till the subscriptions from the various Companies are ascertained. It will be seen that the amount to be spent in prizes this year will reach nearly £100, beiDg much in excess of the amount available last Regatta. This is due in a great measure to the subscriptions consequent on the great increase in the number of members this year. It is the intention of the members of the Club to begin canvassing the town for subscriptions towards the end of the present week, when we hope to hear of their exertions being well seconded by
the public. Should the amount subscribed exceed the calculations of the Club, the prizes for the various races will be proportionately increased. We understand arrangements have been made to secure the services of the band during the Regatta day, which will greatly tend to enliven the proceedings. Thunder Stokm. — Such a storm as visited us between the hours of oue and three this morning has seldom, if ever, been experienced in Nelson before. The wind blew from the nor' west iu tremendous gusts, aud the rain came down in "bucketsful." At about half-past two there was an ominous lull for nearly ten minutes, after which the storm hurst forth with redoubled fury, the effect of the wind, raiu, and hail, at this time being heightened by the vivid flashing of lightning and the roar of the thunder, after which the strength of the gale was expended, and a soft gentle rain ensued, which had a most soothing effect after the uproar that had just ceased. We are told, but cannot vouch for its correctness, that two trees were struck by lightning in Mr. Cross' garden, but beyond this we hear of no damage having been done. The storm appears to have extended some considerable distance, as we find that telegraphic communication with all the stations except Havelock and Picton was interrupted this morning.
