The Nelson Evening Mail. MONDAY, DECEMBER 5, 1870.

Meetings. — -The following meetings are to be held this evening : — The Regntfca Club, at the Ship Hotel, at 7-30 ; the Caledonian Society, at the Temperance Hall, at eight ; and the Farmer's Club at the Stoke Schoolroom, at the same hour. Cricket Match.— The match between the carters and cabmen of Nelson will be played in the Botanical Gardens, tomorrow afternoon, the wickets to be pitched at 1 o'clock. The Nelson Band will be in attendance. Provincial Government Prize Firing. — The firing by the Cadets for the Provincial prizes took place on Saturday afternoon last, when the two highest scores were made by Sergt. P. Adams (46), and Lance-Corporal Watts (44). We shall publish the other scores to-morrow. The Weather and the Gardens. — The cold showers that have fallen within the last two days, and the unexpected frost of last night have proved somewhat injurious to vegetables, the young cucumbers and melons especially having suffered in no slight degree. New Church of England Paper. — Under the title of the Church Messenger the first number of . a new monthly periodical has this day been published in Nelson, the purpose of which may be best learned from the following extract from the prospectus : — " We. desire our members to know what is going on in this part of Christ's Church, especially iv that part of it in the Diocese of Nelson. We hope thereby to stimulate the sympathy and generosity of our members to induce the strong to bear the burdens of the weak, and so fulfil the law of Christ. We desire also to combine with this record, selections and compositions of a practical character, so that the paper may be suited I for general circulation."' The Messenger I contains a monthly calendar with a text for each day ; a short history of " What was done in the last Synod"; a slight sketch of " Diocesan Events ;" and various extracts of a character suitable to a publication of this kind. To the present issue a supplement, containing a speech by Sir Bar tie Frere on "The Bible in India," has been added, but this, we are told, will only be contiuued if the circulation justifies the expense. The want of a publication of this kind has long been felt among members of the Church of England in this diocese, and we have no doubt that the Church Messenger wili improve with each successive publication; and, with the addition of original matter suitable to the requirements of its readers, will soon secure an extensive circulation in the Provinces of Nelson and Marlborough. Which was it ? — lu the Wellington Post's report of the late cricket match we find the following remarks: — ''It says a good deal for Nelson sobriety, or want of enterprise, that there was not a single refreshment booth on the ground. I don't think it can be put down to the credit of sobriety, however, for the number of hotels in the town is something surprising. The only refreshment on the ground consisted of lemonade and similar fluids, procurable from itinerant vendors." The Wanganui Chronicle of the 26th ult. says : — The paragraph in Thursday's Chronicle^ regarding the appointment of Topia as a native political agent for the up-river district, at a yearly salary of £200, is perfectly correct. Considering that Topia was not long ago a rank rebel, we can hardly blame Kemp, who. has always been a staunch friend to the Pakeha, for feeling disappointed, seeing he is only in the receipt of £50 a-year as j a native assessor.
