The Nelson Evening Mail. FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 18, 1870.

The Superintendent is still engaged in visiting the various centres of population out the West Coast, and was most favorably received at a large meeting held at the Grey on Wednesday evening last. Accident to Dr. Irvine.— We regret to learn that a serious accident occurred on Tuesday last to Dr. Irvine, who, in driving through Motueka in Daly's trap, was thrown out, and collar bone fractured. Dr. Irvine came over in the Lady Barkly yesterday, and we are informed to-day by Dr. Cotterell that he is progressing favorably, although likely to be laid up for some little time. The Melbourne Cup. — We may look to receiving news of this race to-morrow, as the Oraeo is then due at Hokitika, and we have arranged to have intelligence conveyed to us immediately on her arrival. From a gentleman who has just arrived from Melbourne, and who was present on the course ou the first day of the races, we learn that Manuka is in excellent trim, and that his chances of success are increased by the heavy condition of the course, which gives a powerful horse, such as he is, a considerable advantage over the more weedy flyers. Nelson Regatta. —We hear the Regatta Club are sanguine of providing a good day's Bport for Boxing Day, should the subscriptions reach the anticipated amount. Several boats are building to compete for the various prizes to be contested for at the forthcoming Regatta, including several yachts which are to compete for the Challenge Cup which is not likely to be carried away from Nelson this year without a hard struggle. The Cup will be open for competition to decked yachts not exceeding 28ft. in length on the keel. Yachts over 22ft. long will have to allow time to those of not so great a length at the rate of half a minute to the foot. Yachts under 22ft. will class as 22 feet boats to be allowed time io the same manner as though they were 22ft. keel.
