The paddle-steamer Charles Edward, belonging to the Anchor Line Company, made a trial trip in the bay yesterday afternoon, after having had a lay-up of two months in port. During this time the necessary repairs have been made to the engines and the ship has received a thorough overhaul She left about 3 p.m. and on arriving outside the Boulder Bank was put upon the measured mile, which distance was accomplished in 5 minutes 40 seconds, giving a speed of ten and three-quarter knots per hour. The engines worked smoothly and well, and the performance gave great satisfaction to all concerned. She resumes the West Coast trade on Saturday, under the able command of Captain Holmes.
