It seems extraordinary that the tide of fortune has set so unwaveringly on the Prussian side, in spite of the spirit animating their opponents. In the last news from France, it was stated that at each Mayor's office there is a register, where those who desire to become " bould sogerboys" can have their wishes gratified at once. Upwards of 10,000 volunteers had enrolled tlaemselves. The drafting for the contingent has made sad inroads into our social life: 800 cabbies have taken to "drive" the Prussians; 150 conductors of omnibuses ; waiters and valets innumerable. The Bank of France had to part with 80 clerks, the insurance offices have been well drained, and the " blood contribution" has been very heavy on shop assistants, the proprietors of which establishments will not only continue, in whole or in part, the salaries of their employes, but will take them on their return, wounded or not. Several Grovernment clerks have asked and obtained two months' leave of absence to go a-soldier-
