Public Holiday. — We would again remind our readers of the capital opportunity of making a pleasure trip to Motueka, to be afforded by the Lady Barkly, which, with the Nelson Brass Band on board, leaves the wharf at halfpast eight to-morrow morning, sailing from the Motueka wharf on the return trip at 7 p.m. The Nelson Company of Christy Minstrels, we notice, intend giving a performance at Motueka to-morrow evening. St. Barnabas Church, Stoke. — This church, together with tbe churchyard, will be consecrated by the Lord Bishop of Nelson on Thursday next at 4 p.m., when the sermon will be preached by the Rev. E. Bailey, 8.A., curate of St. Jude's, Manchester. As it is hoped that many visitors from Nelson will be present at the interesting ceremony, arrangements have been made for a coach to leave the foot of the Church Hill at 3 o'clock, returning after the service. The Superintendent at Westport. — The Westport Times of Saturday last, just to hand, contains a full account of the meeting held by the Superintendent there, on Wednesday iast. We shall refer to this more fully on another occasion, but at present must confiue ourselves to publishing tbe only resolution passed at the meeting. On the motion of Mr. Munro it was resolved — That, having heard the address of his Honor the Superintendent, and while thanking him for the full explanation of matters connected with the province, this meeting is of opinion that the utmost confidence in the ndministration of the present Government under the
Superintendency of his Honor, might be secured, provided — that he will make amends for past neglect, by liberally and rigidly carrying out the promises now made for further improvements j that he will candidly acknowledge that he has misunderstood the character and wants of the mining community of the Buller district ; and that he will pledge himself to visit us more frequently, ia order to establish mutual confidence, Canterbury Races. — The Canterbury raco meeting commenced yesterday, and, as usual, our Nelson horses have distinguished themselves, Mr. Redwood having won with Peeress the Cup, the most valuable event of the meeting. The Maiden Plate of 100 soys, added to a sweepstakes of £10 was won by Mr. Nosworthy's Envy, Mr. Redwood's Songstress beiug second. — Canterbury Cup of 300 soys added to a sweepstakes of 20 soys each ; Mr. Redwood's Peeress 1 ; Mr. Studholme's Knottingley 2; Mr. Stafford's Mariner, and a horse named Malabar also run. Peeress won with hands down, Knottingley flogging hard. — Free Handicap of 50 soys, added to a sweepstakes of £5 each for acceptors ; Mr. Stafford's Lacenfeed 1 ; Mr. Garforth's Backbiter 2. For this race there were numerous entries, but we are not aware how many accepted. To-day were to be run the Derby Slakes of 150 soys, added to a sweepstakes of £10, for which Mr. Pedwood's Day Dawn and Bashaw, and Mr. Stafford's Mariner are entered ; the Jockey Club Handicap of 120 soys, in which Peeress and Magenta are engaged ; the Criterion Stakes of 50 soys for which Mr. Redwood has entered Misfortune, aud XXX ; and the Grand Stand Handicap of 100 soys, in which Mr. Redwood's Songstress and Peeress, and Mr. Stafford's Lacenfeed aud Vulcan are to take part,
