The first of Thompson's Eoad Steamers "imported k> to the Colony arrived in Otago last week. It is consigned to Mr. J. L. Gillies and will be used iv the Toko■jmairio district.
A Mr. M'Quade has succeeded in bringing out safely in the Merope from England to Canterbury a very handsome fox. Master Reynard and others of his family might prove very useful in killiDg off the rabbits with which some of the runs are infested to a ruinous extent, but how about the lambs ? Tee Wellington Post learns that the flue ship Firth of Clyde will, on completing the discharge of her inward cargo, proceed to Port Underwood, having been chartered by Messrs N. Edwards & Co., of Nelson, to load wool at that port for London. The Lyttelton Times states that for some days past a painful rumor has been cumut that there has beeu loss of life at the lato fire. It appears that a sailor named Johnston is missing. He left Leslie's Hotel on the night of the fire, and went to the Queen's. Since then he has not been seen. His swag and other property are in Lyttelton unclaimed.
