Excursion Trip. — An excellent opportunity of visiting the Canterbury Races is afforded to our sporting community by the steamer Taranaki, which sails from here for Lyttelton on Friday, and returns the day after the races, which takes place on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday next, i The lovvness of the fare, £5 for a return 1 ticket, and the anticipated excellence ol the races, in which nine of our Nelsor horses are engaged, will probably tempi many to take advantage of such an opportunity. the performance to be given this evening will, we hope, ensure a better house than has yet assembled to witness the acting of the really talented Dramatic Company now in Nelson. The abilities of Miss Adelaide Bowring are said by the press in other parts of the colony to be shown to great advantage in the drama of East Lynne, scenes from which are to be presented to-night, the part of Archibald Carlyle being taken by Mr. Steele. An : Alarming Sacrifice, aud Aladdin, or the Wonderful Scamp, will furnish ample grounds for the exercise of Mr. M'Gowan's powers as a comedian, so that we may expect a really good performance, and we feel fully justified in recommending our readers to pay a visit to the Assembly Room. Scientific Association.— This Society will hold its monthly meeting this evening in the Government Buildiugs, when a paper on " The best means of supplementing the Education of the Colony, and communicating useful and refining instruction," will be read by Mr. F. C. Simmons. Members have the privilege of introducing lady visitors.
