Mourning Hatbands and Their Uses. — A fire burned down some bsuiness premises in Sydney aud amongst others the shop of a man who was so cohered by insurance that tbe company disputed his claim. Amongst tbe stock alleged to be lost were 10,000 mourning hatbands. The counsel for the company cross-examined the sufferer by fire about these hatbands — was'nt it an extraordinary large number ? What probability was there of deaths creatiug a demand in a single shop for 10,000 hatbands ? Replied the witness, " I did not keep the hatbands for those who grieve fer the death of their friends; but those who go into mourning for the grease of their hats." lie got his insurance money. During the bombardment of Sfrasburg, one shell burst in a school for children, and seven little girls were instantly killed. A witty lady, being asked her opiniou of mustaches, replied, "I always set my face against them!'"
