WE the -undersigned PROVISIONAL DIRECTORS appointed at a Public Meeting held on the 10th instant, with instructions to FORM A COMPANY FOR THE PURPOSE of ESTABLISHING GAS-WORKS in the City ofNelson, desire to inform the community to whom we think the explanation is due, that in consequence of a strong feeling of opposition on the part of some of the inhabitants, and, from what we believe to be the want of a cordial co-operation on the part of the Provincial Government, WE DECLINE FOR THE PRESENT TO ACT FURTHER IN THE MATTER. Amongst other things we are* firmly of opinion - that nothing short of the unanimous support of the Public and Government, would enable a Gas Company in the City for many years to pay ordinary interest on capital. Calculating also that we could be sure of the same support aud facilities by Act that have been given to Auckland, Dunedin, Christchurch, and Wellington — we had determined to order the necessary plant for Gasworks by the ensuing mail, but in the face of the opposition above alluded to, we do not deem it prudent to advise the public to subscribe to the project, in the meantime. Should, however, it appear that this opposition is withdrawn, we shall be happy to again place ourselves at the service of the Public interested in Gas. NATHANIEL EDWARDS, WILLIAM WRIGHT, J. R. DODSON, THOMAS CAWTHRON, EDMUND BUXTON. Nelson, 22nd October, 1870. 1997 [1
