Nelson Evening Mail FRIDAY, OCTOBER 14, 1870.

Karamea. — We understand that Mr. Eeuben Waite, of West Coast fame, proposes starting for the Karamea tomorrow with the intention of looking into mining matters there and seeing whether there is an opening for starting a store in that district. Mr Waite expects to return in about a fortnight, when we shall no doubt; receive from him an interesting description of his trip.

Mr. Heller with the utmost good nature acceeded to a request made to him last night by the Secretary of the Harmonic Society, and agreed to play two pieces at the concert. This was made known to the audience by the President, Sir D. Monro, and was received with deafening applause. The two pieces selected by Mr, Heller were " Selections from II Trovatore, and Home Sweet Home, the performance of which is more fully alluded to in our report of the concert. To-night Mr. Heller makes his farewell appearauce before a Nelson audience, on which occasion we are promised thafc everything, including the pianoforte playiug, shall be entirely new. The concluding part bears the somewhat mysterious name of " What is it ? " Not being behind the scenes, we are unable to say what it is, but fully intend to go and see, and hope to find that a large number of the Nelson public are possessed of the same amount of curiosity. As no doubt many who will be at the gas meeting will like to see this last mystery, we may state that it will Dot be shown before half-past nine.

Gas Supply. — The meeting thafc is called for to-night is one of some importance to the householders of Nelson as it will then be placed within their power to decide the question of the manner in which they are to be supplied with gas, that is to say, whether the work is to be undertaken by the company that has been already formed, or by the Government. There can be but little doubt that the latter would be tbe mere advantageous to the consumer as the object of the Government would not be to make money by the transaction, but simply to pay year by year the interest and sinking fund on the loan raised for the purpose until the whole was wiped off. But on the other hand, a company having been formed in which many of the householders proposed to become shareholders, it seems somewhat hard that the matter should be taken out of their hands unless by the express desire of the public, and therefore the meeting of to-night has been convened in order that the wishes of the people may be ascertained. As this is a matter which must in the course of time affect the more scattered parts of the town, although for the present the operations of the proprietors of the gasworks would necessarily ,

be confined to the more central portions, we expect to see a large gathering to-night, and to hear a fair expression of public opinion on the subject.
