The Nelson Evening Mail. FRIDAY, OCTOBER 7, 1870.
Mr. Curtis, M.H.R. — Mr. Curtis has notified his intention of holding a public meeting at the Provincial Hall, on Wednesday evening next. Bankruptcy. — The Gazette of this morning contains the announcement that William Healy, of the City of Nelson, Boot and Shoemaker, has filed a declaration that he is unable to meet his engagements with his creditors. Christy Minstrels. — Last night's entertainment being for the benefit of Mr. Bent, the - comedian of the company, the programme was unusually good, and was carried out with tbat spirit and ability for which Mr. Rainford's company of minstrels have rendered themselves famous. Heller's Wonders. — Mr. Heller, the somatic conjurer, and celebrated pianist arrived from Wellington by the Gothenburg this morning, and gives one of his entertainments at the Assembly Eoom tonight. Not having seen him perform yet, I
we are of course unable to Bpeak of him from personal experience, but we may state that the press at Christchurch and Otago, has been most enthusiastic in his praises, and we are therefore quite justified in expecting such aueutertainment s has not been given in Nelson for some time past. Regatta Club Meeting. — The October meeting of the Club was held last night at the Galatea Hotel. A number of new members were proposed, and other business transacted. It is estimated that the amount to be raced for this year, will amount to at least £150, besides the Challenge Cup, the value of which, is a!>out £100. The Commodore has been desired to get the Cup from the Government Buildings where it is deposited for safety, aud have it exhibited in Mr. Hunter's wiudow in Bridge-street, where in a few days it will be on view. There seems to every prospct of a hard struggle for the Cup this year, there being no less than three yachts building in Nelson to compete for it, besides those expected from other places.
