The Nelson Evening Mail. WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 5, 1870.

The Rangitoto was to remain at Dunedin until to-morrow and will therefore in all probability miss the mail for England via Suez.

Mining Shares. — Mr H. J. L. Augarde quotes Perseverance Shares, 40s paid, at par. Culliford Shares, fl 17s. 6d. paid, at 30s. per share, 7s. 6d. discount. Business done this day.

Regatta Club. — We would call attention to the advertisement of a meeting of the members of the Regatta Club, to be helii at the Galatea Hotel, at half-past seven to-morrow eveniug.

The Bishop of Wellington. — The interesting ceremony of consecrating the Ven. Archdeacon Hadfield to the bishopric of Wellington is to take place at St. Paul's Cathedral on Sunday next. The Bishop of Nelson will proceed to Wellington for the purpose by the Airedale, and the other Bishops of the colony will assemble there during the week.

Inspection Parade. — The Commanding Officer's Inspection Parade of the City Volunteer Companies will be held at the Botanical Gardens, at 6 o'clock to-morrow evening. We are requested to state that the Commanding Officer expects a full attendance as propositions are to be brought forward relating to the course to be adopted for the future by the volunteers of the province. While on this subject we may state that £100 worth of Provincial prizes are to be shot for shortly.

Government Gazette. — We have to acknowledge the receipt of Government Gazettes of tbe 24th and 30th ultimo, from which we gather the following information : — Low ther Broad, Esq., has been appointed a Warden of the Nelson South-west Goldfields and Resident Magistrate for the districts of Nelson, and Nelson South-west Goldfields. — The Hon. W. Gisborne has been appointed Minister ad interim of Public Works for the Colony of New Zealand. — The resignation of Lieut. W. D. Barnes, of the Waimea Rifle Volunteers has been accepted. — Letters patent have been granted to Spiridion Rinks, of Wellington, for an invention " for the purpose of cleaning the phormium tenax, and other fibres, by the use of chemical appliances."

Heller's Wonders. — Friday night, in the Assembly Room, has been fixed for the first appearance of Mr. Robert Heller. The entertainment promises to be of a highly attractive nature. The first part will be devoted to somatic conjuring, at which Mr. Heller is said to distance all competitors ; the second part will consist of musical selections, performed on a magnificent Erard piano-forte ; and the third part will comprise illustrations of what is termed " Supernatural Vision," all attempts to explain which, appear as yet to have completely failed. So varied a programme taken in connection with the reputation which has preceded Mr. Heller, will doubtless draw a crowded audience, especially as the prices of admission has been fixed at an extremely moderate figurp.

The English Telegrams. — It appears that the Gothenburg left Melbourne while the mail telegrams were in course of transmission from King George's Sound, and that the news as we have received it was telegraphed from Melbourne to Queenscliffe, and there put on board. Great dissatisfaction is expressed throughout the colony at the unnecessary delay which took place in transmitting the telegrams from the Bluff, and articles have appeared in the Otago Daily Times and Canterbury Press commenting, in strong terras, on the abuses by the Government of the telegraph. The Times says that unless the Government furnishes a satisfactory explanation it intends to bring the case before the Supreme Court.

The s.s. Auckland which has lately arrived at Auckland, from the Fijis, reports that, the Coquette was lost on a reef near Luvu.

The Press states that a seam of anthracite coal three feet thick has been discovered in the Malvern hills, on the property of Mr. Hill. {
