Penny Readings. — We would remind the boys of Kelson that the weekly readings will be resumed at the Ternperauce Hall this evening, at 7 o'clock. Winter Evening Entertainments. — We are requested to state that the practice for the next entertainment will not taho place at the Harmonic Hall this evening as notified yesterday. I Nelson Fire Brigade. — We are requested to state that as the financial year has just commenced, the Secretary will be happy to receive the names aud subscriptions of any gentlemen who are willing to place their names on the roll as honorary members. Geological Survey of the Dun Mountain District. — Mr. Davis of the Government Geological Department, has arrived in Nelson for the purpose of making an inspection of the Dun Mountain and Aniseed Valley country, and we trust that the result of his explorations may tend to confirm the supposed auriferous nature of that district. Stoke Band or Hope. — The fourth anniversary of the Stoke Band of Hope was celebrated yesterday at the schoolsoon), when about 60 sat down to a capital tea. The meeting which followed was well attended, the room being filled with the children and their friends, all of whom were delighted by the siugiug, and recitations, and more than all by the Magic Lantern, which was brought up by the indefatigable Mr. Crisp for the occasion. Meeting of Germans. — A meeting of Germans was held on Tuesday evening at the Golden Fleece Hotel, for the pur- 1 pose of forming a committee to receive subscriptions iv aid of the widows and orphans of the German soldiei's who might fall in the present war. The meeting was well attended, the chair being taken by F. Ivelling, Esq., the Gorman Consul, who, in a most powerful and patriotic speech, explained the reason for calling his countrymen together. Other speeches followed which pointed out that now for ihe first time for centuries Germany was called upon to fight again under one leader, to maintain her unity and honor, and hopes were expressed that Fatherlaud's good cause would he victorious. The following gentlemen were elected to form a committee to receive subscriptions, viz., Messrs. Wiesenliavern, Schuhmacher, Hailing, Hatnmerich, Goerman, and Cohen. After the business of the meeting was over and subscriptions collected, the remainder of the evening was pleasantly and spent, amongst other toasts those of her Majesty the "Queen of England, aud Wilhelm, the future Emperor of Germauy, were received with three times three cheers. The head-coverings that the ladies wear now a days, are barefaced false-hoods. " Sir," said a young wife to her husband, a few days after marriage, " You were honest enough to tell me that your chimney smoked, but why didn't you tell me that you smoked yourself ?"
