Taranaki Buildings. — Messrs Bough, G-oulstone, and Luckiehave been appointed by his Honor the Superintendent visitors of the poor house at the old Taranaki Buildings. Steamer Charles Edward. — "We regret to learn that another break-down has occurred to the machinery of this unfortunate vessel, which is now being towed up from the Coast by the Kennedy. Winter Evening Entertainments. — We are requested to state that the ninth of this series of entertainments will take place on Monday or Tuesday evening next. Full particulars will appear in the advertisement to-morrow. Stoke Band op Hope. — As will be seen by advertisement, a public tea, in connection with the Stoke Band of Hope, will take place in the Stoke schoolroom, to-morrow evening, at 5 o'clock, after which the magic lantern will be exhibited. All Nelson friends are invited to attend. Cullifokd Company. — We omitted to notice yesterday the arrival by the Rangitoto of the four-stamper battery for the Culliford Company. It is to be hoped that the road -will soon be placed in such order as to admit of the carriage of the machinery on to the ground.
Meeting of Germans. — A meeting of Germans is to be held at the Fleece Hotel, at 7 o'clock tbis evening, for tha purpose of forming a committee to raise subscriptions for the widows and orphans of those who may fall by the war now raging. We notice that in Wellington and other towns in New Zealand similar meetings have been held with satisfactory results.
Nelson and Cobdkn Railway. — We understand that a letter has been received in town from Mr. Murdoch, the Inspector of the Bank of New Zealand, stating that he is in receipt of a telegram from a trustworthy correspondent in London informing him that the railway contract had been signed upon the understanding that the time for commencing operations was to be extended until the state of the money market at home had assumed a more settled aspect.
