MAILS CLOSE. Notice.— The next mail for Europe and America. via San Francisco, will leave Nelson on Tuesday, 4th October. The nest mail for India, China, &c, and for the United Kingdon, via Suez, Marseilles, and via Brindisi, will leave Kelson per Kangitoto on Tuesday, 27th instant, at 6.30 a.m. Tor Wellington, Napier, Canterbury, Otago, Southland, the Australian Colonies — per s.s. Eangitoto, on Tuesday, the 27th instant, at 7 a.m. SYDNEY J. DICK, Chief Postmaster. Note. — The postage of letters and papers for Honolulu and North America, is now the same as for the "United Kingdom, viz , 6d. for letters, and Id. for papers. Notice.— The following is the rate of postage from this day: — Country letters posted at any office for delivery at any other office in the Colony 2d. per half ounce; for delivery at the office where posted Id. per half ounce. Notice— Payments of Premiums on Government Life Assurance Policies, may be made through any Money Order Office in Great Britain or the Australian Colonies, on the days noted in the Policies ; but the Government reserves to itself the right of requiring payments to be made, in Great Britain three months, and in the Australian Colonies, one month in advance, should it be deemed necessary.

Postage for the Australian Colonies (except "Western Australia) to be as follows, from and after the Ist instant, y\z :— Not exceeding _ oz., 3d. ; not exceeding 1 oz., 6d. ; not exceeding l_ oz., 9d. ; and so on increasing 3d. for every _ oz. The progressive rates of postage on letters posted in New Zealand for delivery in the Australian Colonies, or Great Britain, or British Colonies or Possessions, not exceeding § oz., one rate; exceeding _ oz., but not exceeding 1 oz., two rates ; exceeding 1 oz., and not exceeding 1| oz., three rates ; and so on for every additional _ oz. or fraction of half-an-ounce, one rate.
