The steamer Wanganui arrived at Wanganui on Saturday last having among her passengers Mete Kingi, M.H.R., and his better half. Before they had landed, Mr. James Lett, clerk to the steam company, seized seventeen half-pound tins of powder, 1750 caps, aud 40 pounds of shot, concealed on the persou of the woman, which she was trying to get on shore with. The powder was taken by the officer to the Custom House. Mete Kiugi said he had no permit, but had got the powder from the Hon. D. M'Lean, the Defence Minister. He has since produced a letter from the Under Secretary, authorising him to have the powder. Never owe any man more that you are able to pay, aod never allow any man to owe you more than you are able to lose. As a general rule, self-interest is the mainspring of our actions, aad utility the test of their value.
