The Nelson Evening Mail. THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 22, 1870. PERSEVERANCE COMPANY.

The Lady Barkly arrived just as we were going to press, with 1 80 ounces of gold, the result of a fortnight's crushing. Penny Readings. — The hoys of Nelsou are reminded that the weekly readings will take place at the Temperance Hall to-night, on which occasion The Bishop of Nelson will render his assistance. Doean's Eeef. — We are glad to learn that this reef, showing good prospects, has again been struck about a quarter of a mile to the south of the point to which it was last traced. The Gourlay Family. — We would remind our readers that the whole of this clever family, including Miss Minnie, who has hitherto been indisposed, are to give a performance at the Assembly Room, tomorrow evening, for which occasion a most attractive programme has been provided. Diocesan Synod. — The Synod of the diocese of Nelson will be opened to-morow, when there will be divine service at Christchurch at 11 a.ro., and the opening address will be delivered by the Bishop at the Temperance Hall, at four o'clock in the afternoon. Artizans' Society. — The great success that attended the artizans on their last performance has induced them to advertise another entertainment for to-morrow evening consisting of a variety of songs, readings, and recitations, to be followed by the laughable farce entitled " Watch- j ing and Catching," which afforded so much j amusement on the last occasion of itsj being acted. The U.S.S. Resaca has arrived at Auckland from Fiji, and reports the death of the missionary in charge of Erromanga, New Hebrides ; also another massacre of 260 Fiji men by the same heathen tribes [who committed tbe previous massacre]. This time they fell on Korobalavu, the people occupying the mountains of the Upper Rewa River, being offended at Korobalavu wishing to turn Christian. The Levuka settlers have formed a municipality, and asked Cakobau to allow them a commission to administer law in his name.
