MINING INTELLIGENCE.
MR. H. J. L. AUGARDE's WEEKLY REPORT. There is not much business to record this week, although a few shares have changed hands. The market is decidedly firmer, holders not wishing or endeavoring to sell. Culiiford Shares, £1 17s. 6d. paid. The happy results which have attended the works, carried on under the raanagement of Mr. Grill, must be considered good news, aud this, added to the hourly expected arrival of the machinery from Melbourne, tends to give a little more stability to the shares in this Company. Perseverance Shares, £2 paid. Shares have changed hand 3at par this week. The Lady Barkly not bringing the returns from the 6th crushing, somewhat disappointed shareholders and prevented business. On Wednesday next, we may look for the returns, which, it is to be hoped, will prove favorable. Pioneer Shares, £7 paid. The contract taken by Mr. Bray, is being carried on with success. The prospects of this mine are improving, and the call annouucetl long since, is not required at preseut. There is no business to report. Shares a-o well held. Lucky Hit Shares, £10 paid. No business. A meeting was held last week, and the directors intend to visit the claim shortly, in order to decide upon future action. Masonic Shares, £11 10s. paid. Nothing new to report. Commercial Shares, £18 paid. Inactive ; no new feature to record; future action undecided. Mount Ophir Shares, £9 paid. The contract to get out the 10 tons of cement is being persevered with. Report speaks well of the stuff. The Perseverance battery, however, will soon g : ve us the result, which is expected to be favorable. Our share market cannot boast of any large amount of business this week, a few Perseverance shares only having changed hands. The shareholders in this company were much disappointed at the non-arrival of returns this week from the sixth crushing. Would it not be better to arrange for a monthly return ? This would give ample time, and allow for accidents. Active measures are being taken in Brace & Cook's claim, and machinery is talked of, so that with two batteries at work at Collingwood, all the smaller claims will soon be tested. The striking of the reef (which is looking well), in Culliford'a claim, must be looked on as a great result, and holds out good hopes for the Wangapeka district. The battery for this company leaves Melbourne about the 17th inst. The Waimea South battery is also shortly expected ; Fawcett's two stamper battery is already on the ground, and once these batteries are at work, and returns in the shape of gold coming down, a great change may be looked for in the state of affairs in NelsoD. Summer is approaching, and his Honor the Superintendent having returned from Wellington, our roads should now be the first care. It is to be hoped that active measures will be taken on this important point, especially with regard to the Wangapeka, Karamea, and Upper Buller districts. There are plenty of men unemployed, and the making of roads should be now our first charge, so that when machinery arrives there may be no delay in getting it on to the ground.
