THE NELSON VOLUNTEER FIREBRIGADE, TO WIT.

To the Editor of the Nelson Evening Mail. Sir, —The somewhat astoundiug paragraph that appeared inyour issue of Saturday evening last, in regard to ray account for four bottles of brandy supplied to the brigade on the night of Mr. Shea's fire, as brought before the Annual Meeting of the Nelson Fire-Brigade, held on Friday evening last, needs some remarks. You state "some discussion took place over this account, and the slight refreshment provided to the workers might have been left uncharged for." Now Sir, I am utterly at a loss to understand how you could place before the public such a paragraph, most emphatically impressing on the public mind at large, that the said

Jour bottles of brandy were the only refreshments supplied during the fire, and ia the praise worty efforts of the brigade to save ray property arid self from ruin, being theu quite uninsured. I must now beg to state that I made open house, took beer outside to the men, but being a bitter cold night, they wished for brandy, which was supplied in any quautity, both inside and out, aud I have since been told by witnesses, that the brandy was actually going begging round for consumers. Now, with respect to the idea of " four bottles of brandy," They were applied for by the officers of the Brigade in the house, and on delivery of each bottle, I was distinctly told to keep an, account of such bottles so supplied, as they would settle fdr them; upon such instruciions, the account was kept: — and there the matter would have ended, for I should have taken no further notice of it, had it uot been for Mr. Cooksey, who wished me on three distinct occasions to have the account sent in to the secretary, otherwise, I should have treated such a mean application with contempt and beneath my notice. I now trust you will give publicity to my letter, as in justice to myself, I am in duty bound to make the above explanation. I am, &c, Charles Moore. Windsor Castle Hotel, September 19th, 1870.
