Football. — A telegram from Wellington states that the Nelson players proved victorious in the football match, the two goals being kicked by C. Cross and A. Drew. Penny Eeadings. — It will be seen by advertisement that owing to the Artizans having fixed upon Thursday evening for their quarterly entertainment, there will be no penny readings for the boys this week. The Close op the Session. — The Parliament was to be prorogued to-day, and the members to leave Wellington in the Phoebe, which was to sail at 2 p.m., and may therefore be expected here tomorrow morning. Collingwood Coal. — We learn that a shipment of Collingwood coal has been made to Wanganui, the schooner Waihopi having arrived there yesterday morning with 70 tons, after a capital passage of 24 hours from Collingwood. Cullifoed Reef. — We are glad to learn that a. letter has been received by the directors to-day from Mr. Grill, the working manager, stating that a shaft had been sunk for 65 feet, at which depth a drive was made to the Eastward for 7 feet, at which distance the reef was struck showing a thickuess of 2 feet, with gold plainly visible in the stone. The Gourlay Family. — "Mrs. M'Gregor's Levee " as performed by this talented family last night, was a great success, the quaint Scotch characters introduced to our notice being amusing to a degree. " Little Johnny " showed to great advantage in his parts, and fairly brought down the house with his capital singing. Nor must we omit to mention the excellent arrangement of the stage which never looked so well as it did last night. We are glad to learn that another entertainment is to be given to-morrow evening. Winter Evening Entertainments. — We would remind our readers of the entertainment to take place this evening. Mr. Wakefield, whose ability as a lecturer has been universally recognized in Wellington, is to lecture on Geographical Discovery, and, with the ample fund of anecdote and adventure he has at command, we have no doubt that he will make his half-hour pass most pleasantly to his hearers. The second portion of the programme includes a new comic song j ust imported from Eugland, and a song from a gentleman who is passing through Nelson, and is said to possess one of the finest amateur voices ever heard here. These, with the instrumental and vocol music by our most talented local performers should, and no doudfc will attract a large audience. Quartz-Reefing. — A gentleman from Clunes, in Victoria, who passed through Nelson last week on his way to the Thames, gave some interesting information to a friend of his in this town regarding that great centre of quartz-mining. It appears that the original Clunes Company was composed of shares of £15 each, the dividends on which, up to the present time, have reached £1000 on each share in about 12 years, the yield of gold has ■ never been more than 17dwts. and yet these shares find purchasers at £175, at one time having reached £350 per share. They have 82 head of stampers at work with all the latest improvements in goldsaving apparatus. He stated also that in many companies in Victoria, the gold got out of the stone only paid working ex* penses, and the profit (in some cases a handsome one) was derived from the gold obtained from the mundic or pyrites j What would the Clunes folks think of the Wangapeka reefs with a minimum yield of 2ozs. to the ton ?
