CORRESPONDENCE.

o THE CITY LAMPS. To THE EDITOR OP THE NELSON EVENING MAIL. Sir. — Nelson may justly boastof its Companies, Associations, Fire Brigades, Volunteer Rifles, Artillery, &c, &c , but I have an opinion that there is no company more usetul, less expensive, and more efficient, than what I shall call (for want of a better name) the Nelson Light Brigade. Qhey are always on duty, on the finest day and on the coldest night, rain or sunshine, light or dark, " a light by night, a leaning-post by day," a centre of attraction around which men of all grades congregate to hear and tell the latest news and form little committees upon all sorts of subjects. To be serious, the city lamps cost the Board of Works very near a hundred pounds a year, including all expenses, attendance, kerosine, wick, matches, and breakages, for all of which the Lamplighter is solely responsible, and I must say that, if the whole city were banded together under a vow not to divulge or give evidence against persons who wilfully, maliciously, i feloniously, or carelessly smash, break, or injure

the town lamps, they could not keep the secret more effectually than they do. It is not once in ten times that anyone will tell who did the damage, although they have seen it done in open daylight. They won't tell for fear they will have some trouble, so they " don't know." A reward will be offered in future. I am &c, ' . Lamflighter.
