A Strange Case. — By the Phoebe, ' which arrived from the South yesterday, \ two children, of the name of Avery, ' were passengers from Canterbury, their sailing from that Port having been pre- ' viously intimated by the following telegram, which was addressed to Mr. Avery, Nelson : — " Sent two boys by Phoebe, at 4 p.m., from Orphanage. (Signed) Edward Gii aud." The telegram, which was dated Christchurch, August 15, was for- , warded to Mr. Avery, iu Bridge-street, who, however, disclaimed all knowledge whatever of the children. On the arrival of the Phccbe, a policeman was sent down to the wharf, and the two boys were found on board the steamer, one of them being the bearer of a letter addressed to " Mr. Avery," and signed E. Hooper. The letter is from the mother of the boys who addresses Mr. Avery as her husband and remonstrates with him for takiug her children from the Canterbury Orphanage where they were near her, aud living in comfort, and being educated and trained to all that is *' good and great," The two boys have been taken iu charge by the authorities and anyone who cau give any information that may tend to solve the mystery which at present surrounds them will be doing a favor to all parties concerned.
