The Nelson Evening Mail. WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 17, 1870.

Auxiliary Fire Brigade. — The anniversary dinner of the Auxiliary Fire Brigade is to take place at the Customhouse Hotel, this evening, at 8 o'clock. Winter Evekixg* Entertainments. — Despite the unfavorable state of the weatber, a large crowd was collected round the door of the Assembly Room last night, eagerly waiting for the time appointed for the opening of the doors; and within ten minutes of admittance being granted, the room was filled to overflowing. Punctually to the tini6 annouuced for the commencement, Dr. Williams, who was appointed chairman, introduced the Bishop of Nelson, who at once proceeded to deliver his Lecture on Venice, which jin itself was most entertaining, but, illustratod as it was by tbe most beautiful dissolving views of that charming city, ( and accompanied by appropriate introductory airs on the harmonium, it created quite an enthusiasm among the audience, who were scarcely prepared to see such exquisite pictures. Uufortunately, before; the lecture was much more thau half over, | the supply of gis ran short, and the Bishop was, consequently, unable to exhibit the whole of his views, but we are glad to learn that he has kindly promised to conclude the lecture, with its illustrations, on a future occasion. With regard to the second portion of the entertainment it would be invidious to notice any particular item, but it is quite sufficient to say that, owing to the time and labor that had been expended upon its preparation by those who look part in it, it was as successful as could possibly have been desired by the promoters, or have been expected by the large audience, who loudly expressed their approbation of each portion of it, Mr. George Cotterell, who kindly rendered his assistance, sung his little Operatta entitled "Beauty andthe Beast," aud it is scarcely necessary to say that he was applauded to the echo, and most certaiuly would have been encored had it not been that it was felt that, after so long and exhausting a song, it was scarcely fair to call upon him again. The next entertainment will comprise readings by Mr. Justice Richmond, and the Rev. G. H. Johnstone, to be followed by vocal and instrumental music. We are requested to state that there will be a practice at the Harmonic Hall to-morrow eveniug, at 7 o'clock.
