The on Evening Mail. SATURDAY, AUGUST 13, 1870. NELSON BOARD OF WORKS.

o Friday, August 12. Present : All the members. HILTON-STREET . The Surveyor was instructed to write to Mr. Harley requesting him to make up the ditch in Milton-street. SHAKESPEARE WALK. Agreed, That Mr. Acton Adams should be informed that the Board are willing to comply with his wishes as regards the road in Shakespeare Walk, provided he pay half the cost of the work. WIDENING HAVEN ROAD. A letter from the Provincial Secretary was read, stating that the sum of money placed on the Estimates and voted for this purpose (£200) was meant to be applied to the permanent widening of the road to its proper width, and it would only be on the understanding that it should be so applied that the Government would consent to hand the amount over to the Board for expenditure. If insufficient to accomplish the work it might be supplemented by a portion of the vote of £500 for Haven-road and Waimea-road, and by the unexpended balance of £72 from the vote of last year. A somewhat discursive conversation er.sued, opinions being freely expressed that the Government had no right to dictate how the money should be spent, but that it should be handed over to the Board, who were responsible, not to the Government, but to the ratepayers; one member characterising the letter just read as a most impudent proposition. After some further remarks to the effect that the Board should stand upon its dignity, it was resolved, That the Surveyor acknowledge the receipt of the letter of the Provincial Secretary, and inform him that the sea-wall be carried out to the proper line as indicated by the Provincial Engineer, but the Board consider that the Provincial Government have no right to dictate to them how they shall expend the funds voted by the Council for the maintenance and improvement of the Haven-road. CART HORSE. A letter was received from Mr. Newto" stating that he had held a post mortem examination ou the body of oue of the horses that had died in the service of the Board, and found that death had ensued from natural causes.
