CULLIFORD COMPANY.

We have much pleasure in publishing j the highly favorable report of the direc-j tors of the crushing of the quartz sent; from the Culliford mine to Melbourne, by j which it will be seen that the atone from j the main reef yielded at the rate of a trifle over 2 ozs., and that from the lower reef about 18 dwts, to the ton. We are informed that the gold taken from the quartz ; has paid every expense connected with the sending to Melbourne, the crushing, and the retorting, and we may fairly congratulate the shareholders on such satisfactory results having been obtained at no cost to the Company. The following is the report : — Report on two lots of Quartz treated for the Union Bank oe Australia, at the Pioneer Crushing Works, Long Gully, ' Sandhurst. j Lot No. 1, consisting of 20 bags marked No. 1, 1 to 20 respectively, contained 2000lbs. of quartz of solid compact character, and similar in appearance to many of the gold-bearing reefs on Ben- | digo. To ensure that the whole of the quartz contained in the lot should be crushed, a quantity of sandstone was first crushed so as to form a solid bed in the stamper box, the bags were carefully washed, the quartz was then crushed through the very finest gratings to be obtained, viz , 180 holes j to the inch. { The amalgam obtained from the stamper box weighed 3 oz 7 dwts., consisting of three or four pieces the size of small shot, and the remainder of small solid gold; the quicksilver used in the ripples having been retorted yielded 1 oz. 6 dwts. amalgam, which being retarded with the return from the stamper box gave 1 oz. 16 dwts. of gold. • Lot No. 2, consisting of 10 bags marked No. 2, I to 10, contained 1000 lbs. of quartz of a somewhat laminated character in which no visible gold was observed ; this lot was treated in precisely the same manner as No. 1. Mo amalgam whs obtained from the stamper box, but the gold being very fine, was absorbed in the quicksilver, which on being retorted yielded 8 dwts. of gold. The estimated cost of crushing in bulk would be ss. per ton for No. 1, and somewhat less for No. 2. No copper plates were used, as they would probably render the return inaccurate, although were a quantity of quartz being crushed it would be ad visible to use them. June 13th, 1870.
