The Missing Man at Motueka. — We find that we were misinformed the other day when we stated that the body of Herbert Grooby had been found. Later news from Motueka states that the search has beeu given up as fruitless, and it is supposed that the unfortunate man must have fallen over a cliff into the Graham river, and, that in all probability the body was carried out to sea in the last fresh.
Address ' to Hek Majesty. — We were yesterday shown by Sir D. Mouro, the Speaker of the House of Eepresentatives. au address of thanks to the Queen for a present 'she had made to the Library of the General Assembly of " Leaves from the Joururil of our Life in the Higblaads," accompanied by her autograph. The address which is most beatifully illuminated is surmounted by a cleverly executed* etching of the Royal Arms, while in the margin are three photographs, one being a view of the Hutt, and the other two cousisfcing of groups'of Maoris surrounded by canoes, meres, paddles, and other native implements, the whole forming a really beautiful work of art.
A fire broke out about 10 o'clock on Sunday night, in the Commercial Hotel, Wanganui. The building wa: quickly consumed. The steamer Wallabi was with difficulty saved. She got up steam — the men all the while pouring water on the sails and rigging. The •wind blew the flames towards the river, and the surrounding buidiDgs were saved. The house, stock, and furniture, were insured in the New Zealand Company, for £500.. The fiie originated in the explosion of a kerosine lamp. The building was one of the oldest in Wanganui, and burned with great rapidity. — Wellington Post, May 23.
Last Night's Council. — On the Council meeting, a message was received from bis Honor the Superintendent inclos--ing a Bill for amending the Executive Ordinance, which was laid on the table and ordered to be priuted,. notice being givea of the first reading for this evening. On Mr. Luckie being called upon to move the resolution of want of confidence standing in his name, he stated that as the effect of ibis moiion a fortnight ago had been to render it unnecessary to proceed with it at present, he would allow it to lapse for a time. The vacant seat, formerly occupied by Mr. Fraoklyn, showed that virtually li'*s lesolution had been ' carried at that time. . The Council then went into Committee on certain resolutions of Mr. Waslney's, relative to the election and term of office of College Governors. It having been decided that the power of eleciiou should rest for the future with the Provincial Councils of Nelson and Marlborough, and that the G-overnors should serve for a period of six years instead of nine as at present, the discussion was adjourned in order that the deputatiou might again confer with the Board of Governors. The Speaker having resumed the chair, the Council again went into Comraitlee for the purpose of- considering his Honor's message referring to the endowment of public libraries and institutions with , certain blocks of the Waste- Lands of the Crown. Some discussion ensued, and the debate was adjourned for a week. The Council then adjourned at 9 p.m. until 5 o'clock this evening.
