Tea. MEETrN6.-^-The : T.ea~irieeting, in celebration of tbe^ Hope .Wesley an Chapel Anniversary, which was advertised to take place last Monday, but was postponed on account of the weather, will be, held on the Queen's Birthday.
The Theatre. — The weather proving more favorable last night, the Star Company gave a performance to a much larger audience than they have hitherto' had. The programme' for this evening is a most attractive one consisting of the celebrated^ drama " The Poisoner," and the laughable farce entitled "Mr. and Mrs. White.
Cullifokd Ueef.— A crushing took place yesterday, of .67lbs. of stone from this reef, when the rough gold taken out weighed 4dwts. 18grs. Finer gold' was "to be seen. Tn" the tailings, and. it is ranticipated that the total yield when this is obtained by the.amalgamating process, will be at the rate of lOozs. to the .ton. ;
The Gazette. — The 5 : Government Gazette of the 17th instant, contains the appointment to the Commission of the Peace of A. S. Collins, Esq., and Al'ex. Sclanders, Esq., of Nelson. .His Excellency the Governor has accepted the resignation of Captain F. J. Bluridell, of the Waimea Volunteers; ■'■-}
Pionekk Compact.— -News of a highly satisfactory nature, has been received from this mine, where a shaft of 22 feet in depth has been sunk, revealing the cheering fact that the further the work is carried the more do the prospects improve. Four of the' men " engaged in driving the shaft are old Cornish' "miners, and they report that from their previous experience in such matters they feel justified in. stating that the mine is likely to prove one of considerable richness. : .
Accident.^— We regret to learn that a serious accident occurred yesterday' to Mr. Brown, the engineer for the firm of Messrs. N. Edwards and Co., who was thrown over by the rebounding' of a plank on which lie was walking on board the steamer 1 Lyttelton, and. falling oa his forehead on the stones below sustained a severe injury. In addition to the wound ou his head, he is much /bruised about the body, but we are glad to say that he is not seriously hurt; ' Takaka tlNiTili) Cricket , Club. — We regret that we are unable io' publish in full a Bomewhat lengthy '. account which has been futnished ua of: a meeting of cricketers -lately held at the Courthouse, Takaka, from which' it appears that animated discussions are by no means confined to the Provincial Council, but that even in the out-districts, matters of interest are debated with considerable warmth and vigor. The result of the meeting, we are told, was that the proceedings of some previous meeting were" annulled, and that the old office-bearers
