AT THE MEETING- held at the TEMPERANCE HALL on MONDAY EVENING, May 9th, 1870, at 7 p.m., MR. R. BURN, in the Chair. THE BALANCE-SHEET AND REPORT were read, and, on the motion of Mr. Louisson, seconded by Mr. Bolton, adopted. The ELECTION of FOUR DIRECTORS then took place, and resulted in the Election of Messrs. D. Burns. J. Graham, Acton Adams, and T. H. Stringer. THE EIGHTH ANNUAL REPORT OF THE DIRECTORS OF THE PERMANENT BUILDING SOCIETY OF NELSON. IN presenting to the Shareholders the Eighth Annual Statement of Accounts, the Directors have much pleasure in still being able to report favorably of the working and position of the Society, which has exceeded the hopes entertained this time last year, for not only has the five thousand pounds due to the Bank on the 31st of March, 1869, been repaid, but the B series of Shares have also been paid off, with the exception of aboat seven hundred pounds, this will enable the Directors to devote the funds accruing, to the extinguishment of the C series, which will mature in June, therefore after the payment of this series and the balance of overdraft at the Bank, the Society will be in a position to make fresh advances to Shareholders upon approved securities. As a mark of the soundness of the Society's investments, the Directors would remark that notwithstanding the heavy depression of trade and depreciation of property experienced in Nelson during the past three years, only three properties are in hand of all that have fallen into arrear, the others having been disposed oi without loss, and these three are not looked upon as at all likely to entail loss, for the balance due upon each of them is so far below their values that the sale of them can only he a matter of a few months delay. To provide as far as possible for any loss that may accrue, the Directors have commenced a Reserve Fund, consisting of all withdrawal fees, and any expense or loss arising from the Sale of Mortgaged Properties will in future be debited to this account. In conclusion, the Directors direct attention to tho value of the Shares, as shown by the Liabilities and Assets statement, as being the most convincing evidence of the Societies usefulness and profitableness. There are now four Directors to be elected from amongst those nominated, who consist of the four retiring Directors, viz. :— Messrs. D. Burns, J. Graham, I. M. Hill, and T. H. Stringer, and one other nominee, Mr. A. B. Adams. ROBT. BURNS, Chairman. THE EIGHTH ANNUAL STATEMENT OF THE PERMANENT BUILDING SOCI ETY OF NELSON. Dr. Cr. MARCH 31st, 1870.
