The Nelson Evening Mail. WEDNESDAY, MAY 4, 1870.
The question of removing the reporters' table, was brought before tbe Council last night and we would wish, to point out to the members the necessity of providing some more satisfactory accomodation for the representatives of the Press than that which at present exists. We are quite aware that it is contrary to all Parliamentary etiquette that the reporters should be stationed in the midst of the members, but at the same time it has been proved that the position which they occupied last session is the only one where the speeches can be heard, and it is a question for the Council to decide whether of the two is of fhe greater importance, correct reports, or adherence to Parliamentary usage.
Muller's Obphan AsTLUMi—In the account of the funeral of Mrs* Muller which appeared in yesterday's issqe, the number of children should have been 1200 or 1400, instead of 12,000 or 14,000. Scientific Association. —At the meeting of the Association for the pro* motion of Science and Industry, to be held this evening at the Court-house, two papers will be read, one by the Bishop of Nelson on the Hot Springs of Hanmer Plain, and the other by; Mr. T. Mackay on Technical Education. The attendance of members of the Provincial Council is invited. Accident. —Last night as Mr. H. Gill, of Wakapuaka, was returning from town, he fell from his cart about a mile from his house, aud fractured the bone of the arm, between the wrist and the elbow. He managed, however, to get into his cart again and reached home, when Dr. Cotterell was sent for, who promptly attended, and performed the requisite business of setting the bone. The Carandinis. —This Company gave another of their delightful concerts last night,- when Miss Rosin a appeared to us to be in better voice than ever, and her singing of "I'll watch for thee," and "Ring on Sweet Angelus," which she goodnaturedly gave as an encore, was absolutely perfect. Miss Fannie too brought down the house by her exquisite rendering of " Jessie's Dream," which received a well merited encore. Madame Carandini's voice was much stronger than on the previous evening, and her duett with Miss Rosina, "Sainted Mother," was rr most sweetly sung. To-night Miss Fannie takes her benefit, and.as we hear that this is the last visit that will be paid to Nelson by the Carandinis we trnst that a crowded house will testify to the appreciation in which the great talent and marvellous voice of this gifted young lady are held by the Nelson public. The whole company appear to have been reserving their strength for this occasion, the programme being by far -the best yet published. The Estimates for the current year were sent down to the Council last night, and from them we learn that the estimated revenue is £90,000, against £100,400 last year. We give below . a comparative statement of the appropriation made by the Council in its last session, and the proposed expenditure for the year 1870-71.
