The steamer Charles Edward returned to port this morning, at 3 o'clock, from the West Coast Ports, having experienced a succession of terrific westerly gules throughout the round. Captain Holmes reports leaving here last Friday, at 5 p.m., and arriving at VVestport on Saturday afternoon's tide. Left at 4 a.m. on Sunday, encountering a heavy sea on the bar, and strong S.W. Avind on the passage to the Grey. Arrived there the same afternoon, took in coal and discharged cargo on Monday, leaving at 3.30 p.m. When outside, found a heavy sea running, and a strong westerly wind, increasing towards dark to a gale, which raged all night, raising a fearful sea, accompanied by squall of hail and rain. Arrived off the Buller at daybreak on Tuesday, crossing the bar in a terrific sea, which was breaking for miles out. Landed a deck-load of sheep and pigs, and the liokitika cargo, leaving yesterday morning at 8 a.m., and arrived as above.
