English Mail. — A telegram received by the Postmaster, from Wellington, states that the Rangatira will leave that port for Picton and Nelson at 11 o'clock to-morrow morning. Volunteer Ball. — We bave heen requested to state th'at the annual ball will be given by the Volunteers ou her Majesty's birthday, when there is every reason to believe that ifc will be as largely attended as in any previous year. The Provincial Council of Marlborough has refused to vote the Superintendent's salary for the last six months on the grounds that it was entirely owing to the action taken by him in proroguing the Council that the delay in proceeding with the business had occurred. The Caeandinis gave their second entertainment at the Assembly Room last night, and, as usual, delighted their audience with their exquisite music. Each item on the- programme found its special admirers, but to our mind the gems of the evening were the Cavatina, " Bid me discourse," which was rendered by Miss Rosina with the brilliancy and sweetness which always characterise her singing, the selection from II Trovatore, by the whole company, and the "Three Fishers," iu which Miss Fannie's maguificeufc contralto voice is heard to such advantage. If we had to accord the palm to either of these

three it certainly would be to the latter, for we never remember to have heard a song in which words, music, and voice combined with such telling effect as in this strangely fascinating little composition. A most attractive programme is published for this evening, and, if the admirers of really excellent music in Nelson will take our advice, they will not neglect to avail themselves of theopportunity of being present at one of the richest treats that has been offered to them for a long time.
