The Nelson Evening Mail. FRIDAY, MARCH 18, 1870.

Fire Brigade. — The half-yearly meeting of the Nelson Fire Brigade, will be held in the Engine House this evening at half-past seven. ,

Government Wharf. — -We call attention to an advertisment stating that the Government Wharf will be let by auction at the Land Office, at noon to-morrow.

Mr. TV. C. Hodgson is at present inspecting the schools at the West Coast. He reports favorably ou the Westport school.

News just in from "VVaugapeka states that an exceedingly rich leader hu3 been discovered in Culliford's claim, aud that good gold has been struck iv No. 2 South.

The Giassblowers still continue to ' attract large audience?, to whom they ; afford much pleasure and amusement by 1 their exceedingly clever operations. The beautiful and fairy like engines are objects of great attraction and form an excellent means of imparting instruction in the working of machinery. We have heard it suggested that one or two exhibitions in the Waimca districts would be highly acceptable to the country residents, and, iv all probability, remunerative to tho proprietors. We Learn from the Westport Times that Mr. Greenfield and Mr. Blackett had arrived at Westport, ami that the Litter had examined the scene of the encroachments made by the river, and estimated roughly that the sum of £1000 or £1500 would be necessary for protective works. Mr. Greenfield stated that 'he would before leaving, be prepared to authorise the expenditure of that amount. Mr. Greenfield was to proceed to the Grey district, overland, visiting Charleston and. Brighton on the way.
