The Wangapeka. — A report Las reached town that a new reef has been struck in this district, and a number of claims pegged out upon it. The locality is believed to be the upper end of Nuggeiy Creek. A reef has also been discovered in the Baton district by a party of prospectors, but its value is not yet ascertained.
Fatal, Accident in the Wairatj. — We understand that two youug men named Harry Cleaver and — White have been drowned in the Wairau River, but as yet we have received no particulars as to how or where the accident happened. Cleaver, who has for mauy years beeu living with Mr. Ockley of the Wairau Valley, was a son of Mr. Cleaver, formerly landlord of the Plough Inn, Richmond.
We are requested to state that the postal service has been to-day extended to the Wangapeka district. The mail leaves Nelson on Wednesday and Saturday afternoons, arriving at the store of Mr Isaac Fowler, postmaster, on Thursday aud Monday evening. The return mail leaves Wangapeka on Tuesdays aud Fridays, arriving in Nelsou on Wednesday and Saturday mornings. This is at present but a temporary arrangement entered iuto by the Provincial Government until tenders which will shortly be called for by the General Government shall have been rereived.
A Child Drowned. — An inquest was held yesterday afternoon 011 the body of Robert Charles Hannah, au infant of twenty mouths old, who was found drowned in a creek at the back of Mr. Woolford's house in Cambria-street. It appears that the mother, who is living at Woolford's, went to hang some clothes on the line, to do which she had to cross the creek, about four feet wide, by a narrow bridge. The child, who Avas with her, was left near the creek when his mother went back to the house, and, upon her returning some few minutes after, she found he had fallen into the water aud was drowued. A verdict was returned of " Accidentally drowned."
